Dental Implants are the Gold Standard for Tooth Replacement
A “gappy” smile might be cute for a six-year-old but doesn’t look quite appealing if you are a teen or adult. The good news is that you have plenty of alternatives to close that unsightly gap. At Chacon Dental Studio, Dr. Robert A. Chacon Jr. usually recommends dental implants because they are the next best thing to your natural teeth.
What are dental implants?
A dental implant consists of three parts to restore your tooth:
- An implant post.
- A tooth-colored dental crown.
- An abutment to connect the pieces.
The dental implant post is inserted deeply into your jawbone to act as a tooth root. And since it’s biocompatible, it fuses with the jawbone to form a sturdy anchorage after a few months.
Unlike dentures and bridges that replace the visible part of your tooth (the crown), a dental implant replaces your entire tooth up to the root. For this reason, it has the stability of a root structure, giving it the crown of “the gold standard for tooth replacement.”
Dental implant procedure
Implant-based restorations take several months to materialize, but the wait is well worth it. You get prosthetic teeth that act and function like your natural teeth. The procedure starts with a consultation with Dr. Chacon. Here, he takes dental x-rays to evaluate the health of your jawbone. For patients with insufficient jawbone, we recommend bone grafting.
If you have a healthy bone, the dentist inserts an implant in your jawbone. After several months, the jawbone grows around the implant, reinforcing it just like your natural tooth root. Once healing takes place, we install an abutment and finally place a crown to complete the tooth replacement procedure.
Benefits of dental implants

- Deter nearby teeth from shifting into the space
- Can last for life with proper care
- Don’t require cumbersome maintenance
- Implants don’t affect the stability or health of the teeth near the gap
- They are natural-looking

Dental implants are titanium roots, that are replaced with in the jawbone to resemble a tooth or group of teeth. A screw is inserted through the gums and into the jawbone. A porcelain crown is then attached to the screw to become the new tooth or teeth. They can be used to support dental prosthesis including crowns, dentures, and bridges. Today’s treatments are so natural looking, no one will know you had surgery. There’s approximately a 95% success rate for all implants. With modern advances in dentistry, some implants can be restored immediately with life like all porcelain crowns. For more details ask your dentist.
